Temuco, Region of Araucania.
Temuco is a mapudungun word (Mapuche) which means "Water of Temu." This city is the capital of a region called “Region de la Araucanía” and it is located 675 kms. south of Santiago. It is placed at the coast of Río Cautín, it is surrounded by the Ñielol and Conun Huenu hills and also the smashing Llaima volcáno.
This territory was discovered by a Spaniard Conqueror named Pedro de Valdivia around 1552, and was founded on February 24, 1881 by Mr. Manuel Recabarren, the city was built in a small fortress with a pit to contain the fierce attacks of Indians. Around them grew a great population that welcomed various nationalities.
Now a days Temuco is one of the most important cities in Chile, focus point for commerce, universities, tourism and culture, also, gateway to south of Chile.

It was established in April 1929. It is a very traditional place for the sale of Mapuche handcraft products, therefore it is a must see in the Temuco downtown. It has a great selection of textiles products, silverware, wood carvings and antiques. It also has many restaurants offering a variety of local foods and seafood. There are entrances in Portales St., Rodriguez St. and Aldunate St. Opening hours during winter time are from Monday to Saturday from 08:00 am to 18.00, Sundays and holidays from 08:00 am to 15:00. In summer time Monday to Saturday from 08:00 am to 20:00, Sundays and holidays from 08:00 am to 15:00.
Plaza Anibal Pinto

It is located in the center of the city, steps from Hotel Frontera, and is the commercial hub. In front of it stands the City Hall, Cathedral and several buildings that are currently devoted to commercial purposes. In the center of it is the monument 'La Araucana', a work by local artists depicting the protagonists of the city, a gun, a soldier, a warrior and a Mapuche warrior. It also has a modern exhibition and conference room, a water fountain, an amphitheater and a platform for musicians.
It has mature and well-cared for trees. Located between the Prat, Manuel Bulnes, Claro Solar and Antonio Varas Streets.
Anibla Pinto Open Fair

Open air market located in the populous area of the Railway Station, built in 1945 with the aim of creating a center for collection and marketing of agricultural products produced in the area. It consists of 700 locations spread over three blocks from the picturesque old area of Temuco. You can find fruits, vegetables, meats, dairy, legumes, and crafts. Located on Calle Aníbal Pinto, Railway Station area. It is open to the public in winter from 08:00 am to 17:00 pm and in summer from 08:00 am to 18:00.
Regional Museum of Araucanía
El Bosque, Temuco
It was created in 1940 and is housed in what was the old Thiers House. Declared a National Monument, it was built in 1924. It exhibits complete samples of Mapuche anthropology, archeology and ethnology. It has a specialized library with plans and maps of the city of Temuco. It also has a gallery of regional themes.
It is located on Alemana Avenue 084. It is necessary to pay for entrance, except on Sunday. Its opening hours are Monday through Friday from 09:00 am to 17:00 pm, Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 17:00 pm and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 18:00 hours.
Ñielol Hill
Ñielol, Temuco
Nielol Natural Monument is a 89.5 hectares is located in the city of Temuco. There are four hiking trails and at its top there is a beautiful view from the deck. It is administered by CONAF and is regarded as protected wilderness. Its native forest is composed of lingue, laurel, evergreen beech, oak and coigüe: in between these trees copihue grows. There is also abundant fauna, the bandurria, Tiuque, fox, chilla and the monkey of the mountain, the world's smallest marsupial. It has small ponds, gazebos, walking trails, picnic sites, playgrounds, environmental information center and a restaurant with great views of the city. At its summit is the Volcano Observatory in the Andes- South OVDAS unique in Chile and it is not open to the public.
You can access the place by going up Prat street and is open all year until 22:00 hours.
Railroad Museum and Park

It is located north of the station and is known as 'Powerhouse'. It has old models of locomotives manufactured between 1907 and 1953. It was declared a National Monument.

PRODUCTION CENTER OF TRADITIONAL CRAFTS OF THE Catholic University of Temuco. Workshops dedicated to the reproduction of Mapuche silverware and ceramics which preserved the traditions of the craft. Maintains a showroom and is located at Avenida Alemana 1442, corner of 18th of Septiembre. The opening hours are Monday through Friday from 09:00 am to 13:00 and 15:00 to 18:00 hours.
German Becker Sports and Recreation Complex

It is one of four sports venues built for the World Women's Under-20, whose investment reached more than 15 billion pesos. The renovated Temuco Municipal Stadium has a capacity of 18 000 people in more than 17 thousand square meters built. Additionally, there are in the stadium's facilities, a range of recreational and cultural facilities. Among these we can highlight a pool (which works as a recreational resort in summer), playgrounds and a park with lots of trees and recreational spaces, the Teatro Municipal in Temuco (located 300 meters), and the new building Municipal Art School Armando Dufey.

Sitio de Huimpil
Galvarino, Araucanía Region.
About one hundred objects have been recovered in excavations at the Huimpil cemetery , located north of Temuco. The pottery has been the only item that survived the environmental degradation in these latitudes.
